Crossing Paths – Episode 14: Dirty Martini – Part 3
It’s Monday evening. The martini disaster is already forgotten. Helen and Clara continue chatting over their piña coladas.
Clara: Okay, so… you never really told me what exactly happened between you and Thomas.
Helen: Well… it’s a long story.
Clara: We’ve got time.
Helen: Are you sure you wanna hear it?
Clara: I’m all ears.
Helen: Okay, well… we started dating in high school. Then we stayed together for almost two years while we were in college.
Clara: Oh, did you go to the same college?
Helen: No, we didn’t. But we talked every day. We usually managed to see each other on the weekends. It was challenging, but also… very romantic.
Clara: Oh, okay. Interesting. I never knew a long-distance relationship could work.
Helen: Well… it didn’t, in the end.
Clara: I see.
Helen: Tom was an excellent student. He got an offer to take part in a research project in Switzerland.
Clara: Wow. And he took it?
Helen: Well, it was a big deal for him. He wanted me to take a year off from college and go with him.
Clara: Okay…
Helen: I couldn’t do it. I had my own plans, and… I would’ve been completely dependent on him financially.
Clara: Hmm… I see…
Helen: So… he left. And we tried to make it work for a while. But, I blamed him for leaving, and he blamed me for not going with him. We broke up a couple of months later.
Clara: That must’ve been hard.
Helen: Yeah. I was devastated. But… I think it was hard on both of us.
Clara: I bet it was.
Helen: Maybe… I should’ve gone with him…
Clara: Come on. You can’t change the past. Besides, who knows what would’ve happened?
Helen: Yeah… I know. But…
Clara: Nope. Trust me, thinking like that will only drive you crazy. So… don’t do that.
Helen: You’re right. Anyway, enough about me. What’s going on with you and Stanley?
Clara: Uh… it’s a long story.
Helen: We’ve got time.
Clara: You sure?
Helen: I’m all ears.
