Crossing Paths – Episode 4: Is This the End?
It’s Tuesday evening. The office is nearly empty but Helen is still at her laptop, trying to finish one last task. She’s tired but the deadline is tomorrow. She rubs her eyes. Her phone vibrates on the table. It’s Mark. Helen watches the phone for a moment… then picks up the call.
Helen: What do you want, Mark?
Mark: I just want to talk.
Helen: Okay. Talk.
Mark: Listen… I know you’re still angry.
Helen: You bet I am.
Mark: You have to understand, I did it because I was worried.
Helen: You were worried and so you started spying on me?
Mark: I didn’t spy on you.
Helen: You broke into my phone and read my messages, Mark.
Mark: I was scared, okay? I thought there was someone else.
Helen: There was no one else.
Mark: I panicked, alright?
Helen: No… you didn’t! This is how you always are. How long had you been checking my phone?
Mark: That’s not the point. You’re overreacting.
Helen: No. It is the point.
Mark: Alright, listen, I know I messed up. I’m sorry. But I don’t want us to end over something like this.
Helen: It’s not just this. I’m tired of your jealousy!
Mark: What do you mean? I’m jealous because I care about you, alright? That’s normal!
Helen: Mark, listen, I don’t think we can make it work. You need someone that you can control!
Mark: Don’t be ridiculous!
Helen: Oh, I’m ridiculous? Do you remember when you got absolutely furious when I invited Mike to my own birthday party?
Mark: Everybody knew Mike was into you! Of course I didn’t like it. Do you remember the poems that he was sending you?
Helen: Oh god, yes, it was weird. But that’s not the point. You didn’t talk to me for two days!
Mark: Fine, maybe I overreacted. But you’re not exactly innocent either. What about when you freaked out because I commented on Susan’s picture? You weren’t jealous?
Helen: Susan is your ex! And you wrote “you look like a million dollars, honey!”
Mark: That’s not true, I didn’t write “honey”. And we spent the whole weekend fighting over one comment.
Helen: Alright, maybe I was being childish, and I said I was sorry. But I never spied on you!
Mark: Listen, Helen, I don’t want to argue over the phone like this. How about we meet and try to make it work again?
Helen: Mark, I don’t think it’s a good idea. It’s not working for me anymore. I’m exhausted.
Mark: I really want to see you… And I still have some of your stuff that I need to give back to you. How about I drop by this weekend and bring it over?
Helen: Eh, OK, but then we’re done, alright?
Mark: I promise I won’t try anything.
Helen: Sure, I don’t believe that for a second.
Mark: Let’s text each other on Friday.
Helen: OK, bye Mark.
Mark: Bye.
